OneKind
OneKind exists to end cruelty to Scotland’s animals. We do this through our investigations, research and high-profile campaigns. More than that, we give Scotland’s animals a much-needed voice.
For over 100 years, we have worked tirelessly to help put a stop to animal exploitation, cruelty and abuse. Anti-vivisection groups developed in Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century and by 1912, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Vivisection (SSPV) had emerged, spearheaded by committed anti-vivisectionists including the Misses Ivory of Edinburgh.
Over a hundred years on, and with a new name, we are still driven by the same passion that motivated those early pioneers to advance animal welfare, but our remit has expanded to cover all animals – pets, wildlife, farms, labs, and animals used for entertainment.
Despite many successes for animal welfare, animals are still suffering on an unacceptable scale. OneKind works to investigate and uncover cruelty, and then campaign and lobby decision-makers for laws which will protect our animals. Our vision is for people and animals to live side-by-side, in harmony rather than conflict. We won’t stop until every animal in Scotland has a good life, free from cruelty at the hands of humans.
Here’s some of our most recent successes:
• Following our long campaign, Scotland is now the first country in the UK with a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses.
• Exposed and, ultimately, secured a ban on the snaring of mountain hares. This was once a common practice, killing 5000 hares a year in Scotland.
• OneKind played a key role in securing the Protection of Wild Mammals Act in Scotland, making hunting hares and foxes with dogs illegal.
• Anyone used to be able to shoot seals in Scotland. OneKind got Government to introduce licensing and strict restrictions, saving thousands of seals’ lives.
